Practical Ideas to Improving Productivity: Mental health clinicians are often evaluated and reimbursed based in part by their productivity. Sadly, some highly qualified and competent clinicians struggle to maintain a productivity level which is representative of the quality of services they render to the clients they serve. In this presentation, Joe Branch, LPC, will assist competent clinicians with recognizing, learning, and applying practical and proven methods of increasing productivity. Objective: Attendees will be able to verbalize 3 or more ways they can increase their productivity.
Theory Driven Practice: Effective therapy does not happen by accident. It involves contemplation, careful treatment planning, and the application of sound theory. This presentation will focus upon the final part of this equation – applying theory to the practice of therapy to improve the quality of services rendered and to assist clients in achieving greater success. This session will not focus solely upon any one theory, but rather the impact that being grounded in theory has upon practice. Objective: Attendees will be able to explain benefits of theory driven practice over more fluid approaches to therapy.
Recognizing the Real Keys to Progress: As the world of medicine increasingly focuses on outcomes, competent mental health clinicians often struggle internally when certain clients fail to make progress. In this presentation, Jason Turner, LCSW, will review keys to making progress. The presentation will include a review of research in the literature which identifies why some clients make progress, and others don’t. Objective: Attendees will be able to list 3 keys to helping clients make progress, and apply these to their own practice to improve client care.
Differential Diagnosis: Mental illnesses by nature have symptoms which overlap symptoms of similar mental illnesses as well as other medical illnesses. Additionally, many clients present multiple diagnoses comorbidly. Therefore, it is often very difficult to clarify the diagnosis the client presents. Dr. James H. Dalton, LPC, will present keys to an accurate differential diagnosis. Objective: Attendees will be able to list the 5 steps to differential diagnosis.
Ethically Managing Countertransference: When a clinician’s previous experiences or relationships cause them to have a distorted view or reaction to a client, countertransference occurs. Dr. Dana Watson (PsyD) will discuss steps clinicians should take to assess for the presence of countertransference, manage the countertransference, and improve their efficacy with clients. Emphasis will be given to the ethical steps one should take when countertransference is identified. Objective: Attendees will be able to explain 3 or more steps to take when they experience countertransference with clients.
Ethically Upholding Boundaries: Ethical practice as a mental health professional requires reviewing and addressing boundaries with clients. Some clinicians hold to very rigid boundaries, and feel boundary crossings should always be viewed as a violation. At the other end of the spectrum, some clinicians routinely cross boundaries in unethical ways. This session will review codes of ethics and research related to boundaries with clients, and discuss components of healthy boundaries with clients. This presentation will also include items which should be considered when boundary crossings are contemplated. Objective: Attendees will be able to compare and contrast the potential results of different approaches to boundaries with clients.
