The state of Arkansas has reportedly had one of the highest rates in the nation for teens (12-19) misusing prescription pain narcotics since 2002 and by the end of 2007 the state was ranked No. 1 in the entire nation for teens abusing these highly addictive drugs. In order to address this rapid growth of chemical addiction, Out of the Dark Inc. started the Out of the Dark School Chapter community program in the spring of 2009. Since then the program has grown from a few students to over a 1,000 students representing all eight (8) public school districts in Craighead County. The school chapters are guided and networked by the Out of the Dark School Committee which is supported by the community through the Craighead Out of the Dark Coalition.
Since the creation of the Out of the Dark School Chapters, Craighead County student surveys have been reporting that the rate of teen’s abusing all addictive drugs have decreased dramatically.
